10 days of the event window gone and the 2008 Billabong Pro Maui only has until Saturday to finish up the event at Honolua Bay. The contest got off to a strong start, running through the first three rounds in one day, just a few days into the event window. The contest only requires a few hours to finish up, with just 7 heats remaining, but it’s been a week since the Quarterfinalists were chosen and there hasn’t been a wave in sight.
Event organizers and the World Tour ladies have been getting a bit anxious with the short time window left to complete the event, and as such, have opted for a venue change, choosing to move the event to Ho’okipa Beach on Maui’s north. Ho’okipa Beach has a less restrictive swell window, since unlike Honolua Bay, it sits outside of the shadow of Molokai, allowing it access to many of the north west swells that Molokai blocks from reaching Honolua.
The event is expected to resume Thursday morning, when there should be a small northwest swell running. If all goes well, we’ll crown our event champion, Triple Crown champion, and we’ll have a final picture of next year’s World Tour top 17 by end of day. Tune in to the event website for updates, photos, videos, heat sheets and of course, the 7:30am call.
