Billabong Pro Teahupoo wraps up crowning Bobby Martinez

The 2009 Billabong Pro Teahupoo wrapped up on Tuesday in Tahiti, running through the remaining heats of Round 3, through the finals. Bobby Martinez took his second win at Teahupoo in a high scoring American vs. Aussie final against Taj Burrow.

The day started off with Bobby Martinez taking a convincing win over wildcard and three time World Champ, Andy Irons (HAW) in the first heat of the day. Adriano de Souza (BRA) won the following heat, taking a big win over Jordy Smith (ZAF). Next up was a major shocker, with Artiz Aranburu (EUK) knocking out a seemingly unbeatable Damien Hobgood (USA). Shocker two of the day followed, with Tom Whitaker (AUS) barely sneaking by fellow Aussie and high seed, Mick Fanning.

The quarterfinals were even more exciting, with Taj Burrow taking sending CJ Hobgood (USA) home with a 5th place; Mick Campbell (AUS) knocking out fellow tour senior statesman, Taylor Knox (USA); Bobby Martinez continuing his fine form to trump Adriano de Souza; and Aritz Aranburu continuing his giant killing by taking out Tom Whitaker.

Taj Burrow continued his path of domination by stopping Mick Campbell in the first quarterfinal, while Bobby Martinez snuck by a truly charging Aritz Aranburu in the dying minutes of their quarterfinal heat.

  1. A few things:

    1. If BM got that barrel on the Goldie and his nickname was Parko, it would have been a 10.

    2. Taj coming in second puts him into #2 on the WCT, which ensures that Fanning won’t be able to lay down for Parko until Trestles at the earliest.

    3. Parko could be effed. Taj’s first wave against CJ was major league. I expect big results through the Search event. I’m not a Taj fan but I expect him to make the next 3-quarterfinals at least.

    4. Trading Slater for Jihad. Jihad should do well through Trestles.
