Boost Mobile Pro - Day 2 recap
The North American stop on the ASP World Tour officially kicked off today, with the start of the Boost Mobile Pro, live from Trestles in San Clemente, California. Day 2 was held in playful chest to head high waves. Slater dominated Round 1 with a 18.60, easily dispatching his fellow surfers, and scoring the day’s highest heat total. Also advancing straight to Round 3 were other heat winners, Kai Otten, Bobby Martinez, Adriano de Souza, Daniel Ross (who took down former World Champ CJ Hobgood), Roy Powers (who sent 3 time World Champ, Andy Irons to the loser’s round), wildcard Brett Simpson (who took down current World Tour number 3 and past event winner Bede Durbidge, and Ben Dunn), Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, wildcard Sunny Garcia (who surprisingly took out Taj Burrow and Chris Ward in waves that were better suited to their style of surfing), Dane Reynolds,Miky Pikon, Ben Bourgeois, Luke Stedman, Royden Bryson and Dean Morrison. Fortunately, today’s losers will get a second chance in the loser’s round, Round 2. The decision was made to hold the first two heats of Round 2 this afternoon, offering an early preview of the second round. Taj smoked Shane Beschen in Heat 1 with amazing surfing and a combo finish of 18.50 to 9.00. Rob Machado tried, but failed to take down Bede Durbidge in the second heat, allowing Bede to continue forward in his hunt for a World Title. The standouts of the day were Slater’s 18.60 heat, where he absolutely destroyed all waves thrown at him, Taj’s big frontside air reverse, and Jordy Smith’s as-yet-unnamed air/turn thingy, that no one should have ever been able to land (more on that later). The event is scheduledto resume tomorrow with Andy Irons vs. Yadin Nicol starting off the morning. Can Yadin take out the 3 time World Champ? Stay tuned…
