Estoril Coast Pro - weekend recap

Sunday brought a conclusion to the 2008 WQS 6 Star Estoril Coast Pro in big, thumping surf in Guincho, Portugal.

Brazilian, Jean Da Silva narrowly took the win over Gabe Kling of Florida in a rather lackluster final, which had a finishing heat total of 9.83 to 9.67. Jean fought his way to the finals by taking out David Weare (ZAF) in Round 2, Nicolau Von Rupp (DEU) in Round 3, Tonino Benson (HAW) in Round 4, Christopher Allary (REU) in Round 5, Gavin Gillette (HAW) in the Quarterfinals, and local boy Tiago Pires in the Semifinals. Portuguese local, Tiago Pires has booked himself another year on the World Tour with his Semifinal finish.  Jean’s win in Portugal bumps up his ranking significantly, but unless he places in the top 2 in both upcoming 6 Star Prime Hawaiian events, he has no chance of making the 2009 World Tour.

Runner-up, Gabe Kling’s road to the final included wins over Hodei Collazo (EUK) in Round 2, Tanner Gudauskas (USA) in Round 3, Blake Thornton (AUS) in Round 4, Shaun Cansdell (AUS) in Round 5, Jay Thompson (AUS) in the Quarterfinals, and Dion Atkinson (AUS) in the Semifinals.  Gabe’s second place finish cements his spot on the 2009 World Tour.

German-Portuguese superlocal, Marlon Lipke was another standout, in top form for much of the event, taking home a strong Quarterfinal finish that gives him a bump in the WQS ratings and keeps him in strong contention for a berth on the 2009 World Tour.

Tune in to the event website for all of the photos and heat sheets.
