The first event of the 2009 ASP World Tour season has come and gone, and I’m sorting out how I’m going to rearrange my team for Bells Beach. Let’s take a look at how I did with my selection for the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.
My team for the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast:
Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Josh Kerr, Julian Wilson, Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Michel Bourez and Nathaniel Curran.
As is evident, I stuck with all regularfoots, given their better historical performance in the rights off of Snapper Rocks. I severely underestimated the goofyfoot push in this event, given their relatively poor overall performance in events past.
Kelly Slater went down in Round 3 in a big upset that was the biggest disappointment of my Fantasy roster (as well as being my biggest personal disappointment). The only positive to come out of his exit was that Julian Wilson was the one who put him down. Rookies, Michel Bourez and Nathaniel Curran got knocked out in Round 2, while returning veteran went down in Round 3. Sophomores, Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds, and wildcard giant-killer Julian Wilson all fell in Round 4. Taj Burrow made it the furthest, fighting through to the semifinals, where he was comboed by Adriano de Souza.
I’m pleased with the performances put in by Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds, and will keep them on for Bells. Kelly Slater’s early exit was a fluke, so I’ll continue to keep him as my steady bread winner. Julian Wilson was a success, but he’ll have to be replaced by another wildcard or solid Bells performer. I’m going to table Michel Bourez until the South Pacific, and Josh Kerr and Nathaniel Curran until at least Brazil.
Ultimately, I finished with 604 points in the first event; number 5,491 out of 13,239 teams. Not terrible, but my team could be much better. How’d you do?
