Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro - Saturday recap

Saturday’s day of competition at the 2008 Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil saw some big names go down to wildcards and back of packers, and saw other front-runners advance to Round 4.

Saturday ran through all of Round 3, with Taj Burrow (AUS) shining in what was the highest point total heat of the day, with an 18.10 out of 20. Taj has won the event 3 times, making up for almost half of his overall World Tour event win number of 7 events. He is the event favorite going into Round 4. Also posting a big heat total on Saturday was young Fronchie, Jeremy Flores, with a 17.97 out of 20.  Jeremy is currently sitting at number 11 on the World Tour and is fighting his way back into the top ten.  Other surfers advancing were, Bede Durbidge (AUS), Damien Hobgood (USA), Dayyan Neve (AUS), C.J. Hobgood (USA), Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), Tim Reyes (USA), Heitor Alves (BRA) and Tom Whitaker (AUS).

Less fortunate in Round 3 were World Tour number 12, Kai Otton (AUS), who bowed out to wildcard, Marco Polo (BRA); World Tour number 22, Jordy Smith (ZAF), who was taken down by back of packer, Leonardo Neves (BRA); World Tour number 25, Ben Dunn (AUS), who was put down by World Tour number 37, Ben Bourgeios (USA); World Tour number 21, Chris Ward (USA), who was handily defeated by back of packer, World Tour number 42, Daniel Ross (AUS); World Tour number 28, Mick Campbell (AUS), who was defeated by an in-form Miky Picon (FRA), who currently sits at number 26; and World Tour number 18, Taylor Knox (USA), who was taken out by Brazilian wildcard, Bernardo Miranda.
