Joel Parkinson wins the 2009 O’Neill World Cup of Surfing

Joel Parkinson took home the win on Sunday at Sunset Beach on the final day of the 2009 O’Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second event in the 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Though, the win doesn’t put him any closer to winning his much deserved World Title, it does put him in a pretty good position to win this year’s Triple Crown, especially when paired with his quarterfinal finish at the Reef Hawaiian Pro.

Parko snuck by Sunny Garcia in the closing minutes of the final, leaving Sunny with a second place finish and an open invitation to the Billabong Pipeline Masters (Garcia also took home a quarterfinal finish at Haleiwa).  Sunny led for most of the final, after starting out with a near perfect barrel that earned him a 9.47 out of 10. Joel answered back with a few shorter barrels of his own, edging Sunny out by just three-tenths of a point, with too little time to close the gap.  Current World Tour ratings leader, Mick Fanning, took third place, while Hawaii’s Dusty Payne took a distant fourth. Fortunately for Payne, his fight to the finals has earned him enough points to secure a seat on the 2010 ASP World Tour.

The Parko vs. Fanning final was an interesting preview of what’s to come this week at Pipeline.  Though their seeds will keep them apart until further rounds, only one will walk away with the 2009 world title.  Can Joel win both the title and the Triple Crown at Pipe?

Check out the event website for a complete recap, photos, videos and heat sheets.  See you at Pipeline.

  1. Sunny is in top 15 form and should get a wildcard if he wins the Triple Crown.

  2. I absolutely agree. May the “rebel tour” bring a more flexible/creative approach to top talents like Sunny. The good news… Jihad Khodr is out!
