Kelly Slater takes the win at Pipeline!!!

Winning five out of the first nine events this season crowned Kelly the 2008 World Champion.  But after skipping out of Brazil, Kelly wasn’t about to rest on his laurels and let his better than 50% first place streak go away.  In typical Kelly style, he arrived for the event at the last minute, after chasing a swell with Andy Irons and a few others in the South Pacific, and proceeeded to dominate each and every one of his heats throughout the event.

Beginning in his first heat of the competition, Kelly drew Hawaiian local and Pipeline specialist, Ezra Sitt, and topped him by nearly 10 full points.  Round 4 had him face off against Kieren Perrow (AUS), who he all but destroyed with a combined heat score of 19.40 to Kieren’s 7.96.  Kelly then drew wildcard Pipeline resident and former Pipe Master, Jamie O’Brien in the Quarterfinals.  Unfortunately for Jamie, his home court advantage was trumped by Kelly’s mastery of wave and board, leaving Jamie with an 11.84 to Kelly’s 18.63.  The Semifinals pitted Kelly against fellow mainlander, Huntington Beach’s pride, Timmy Reyes.  Though Timmy dominated most of the heat, Kelly pulled a Kelly Slater, and scored a 9.0 and a 10.0 within mere seconds of one another.  San Clemente’s Lost son, Chris Ward put up an amazing Pipeline campaign to face off against Kelly in the final.  In the end, Chris just couldn’t put a score together, and he was eventually comboed with a score of 7.23 to Kelly’s 14.00.  No shame in losing to the champ… especially when this is his 9th World Title year and 6th Pipe Masters win.

Congratulations Kelly!  You never cease to amaze and inspire us.
