Sure it’s a few years old now, but the famous sequence of Nathan Fletcher attempting to do a 40 foot bomb drop from a Santa Cruz cliff to a wave is timeless. His attempt scored him the cover shot on the September 2006 TrannyWorld Surf magazine, a cover shot which has become nearly as famous as Chris Cote’s penchant for Stand Up Paddling. I kid…
Though he admittedly didn’t make the drop, the mere act itself is commendable, if not certifiably insane. More amazing still is the fact that Nathan emerged from this attempt unscathed, yet broke his femur on a routine cutback to foambounce at Pipe a few weeks back. We have seen numerous successful similar attempts (including one on video by a close childhood friend of mine), but we haven’t yet seen a successful bomb drop of this magnitude. With the number of cliff jumpers in Santa Cruz alone, you think one of their aerial wizards would have (literally) jumped on this. I wonder if Nathan will be priming to give it another go once his leg is all better.
