New format on the ASP World Tour - no more second chances

During our interview with Rabbit Bartholomew, he was kind enough to give us the heads up on the new event format for the ASP World Tour, but what is it and what does it all mean?

1) Single elimination - there is no more “loser’s round” and there are no more second chances. Each heat is man-on-man, with the winner advancing and the loser exiting the event. This means we’ll be seeing exits from the very first heat.

2) No more Round 4 - taking away the “loser’s round” means one less round of competition is necessary. As a result, the eight winners of Round 3 go directly to the quarterfinals.

3) Three day event - the new format cuts the overall event time from 4 days to 3, allowing for the contest to make the most of the best possible conditions within an event window and allowing the event to run from beginning to end in a typical three day swell cycle.

4) Seeding means everything - the previous year’s top 16 surfers automatically start in Round 2, bypassing the first round. The remaining surfers from the top 45 will have to duke it out in Round 1, along with any event wildcards.

Stay tuned for the 2009 ASP World Tour season to see the new rules in action.
