Pancho Sullivan surfs his last heat on the World Tour

After only three years on the ASP World Tour, Pancho Sullivan has officially surfed his last heat as a World Tour surfer.  Pancho was one of the oldest rookies to make the World Tour when he joined the tour at 32 years of age in 2006.  Though he competed on and off in multiple ASP events for over a decade, it wasn’t until 2005 that Pancho made a full fledged run on the World Qualifying Series and earned a spot on the elite tour.  Pancho fit right in with many of the top pros, many of whom had said for years that Pancho was good enough to be on the World Tour.  In his first year, 2006, he stumbled along, yet managed to requalify, finishing in 27th place.  In 2007, he hit his stride on tour, finishing in 7th place, just one spot behind fellow Hawaiian and three time World Champ, Andy Irons, and four spots ahead of former World Champ, CJ Hobgood (USA).

Pancho brought an element of power and size to the tour that was lacking amongst many of the flyweights that have populated the top 45.  He delivered fierce hacks and a big wave prowess of yesteryear, but was no stranger to an occasional new school, high performance maneuvre, occasionally even pulling airs in heats.  His presence on tour will be missed, but we’re sure to see more good things from Pancho in the years to come.
