The first contests of 2009 for the men’s and women’s World Tours were put on hold once again on Wednesday, as waves failed to pick up on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia.
Last year’s World Champ and defending event winner, Kelly Slater got off to a good start this year, claiming his Round 1 victory on Saturday with an almost landed, huge alley-oop on his opening wave, followed up by a ridiculous lay back gouge. He topped his heat, while riding a self-shaped 5’4”. Always raising the bar, Kelly is looking solid on his quest for ten titles.
Last year’s women’s World Champ, Steph Gilmore also stomped her authority on the first day of competition, handily taking her Round 1 win. Last year’s event winner, former World Champ, Sofia Mulanovich had a much less successful Round 1 heat, taking third in her heat and resigning herself to the Round 2 “loser’s round”.
A new swell is on the horizon, with waves expected to start showing on Thursday, and continue to grow through the weekend. Keep tuned in to the event websites for updates, photos, heats on demand, heat sheets and all the live action.
