Pro Surfing and Contests

RC’s Katin Pro Am Team Challenge

RC’s Katin Pro Am Team Challenge, presented by Jack’s wrapped up on Wednesday in it’s second day of competition, with Brett Simpson taking the Pro Am win and Hurley taking the team win.  With a contest window that ran from January 20th to 25th, the event flew through the two needed days of competition on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Katin Pro Am featured teams of 4 surfers from a wide variety of sponsors going head to head in four man heats for individual and team glory.  The top two surfers from each heat advanced based on ASP judging criteria.  On the individual front, Brett Simpson topped all comers to take home first prize and $4000.  On the team front, team Hurley took home the most points, with all four team members making it to the semifinals, and two making it to the final heat.  In the finals, Hurley team members Brett Simpson and Rob Machado took first and second place respectively, giving Hurley the push it needed to win the event and the big prize, a two-page advertisement in Surfing Magazine.

Several World Champions have won the Pro Am in the past, with Kelly Slater, Tom Curren and Sunny Garcia all taking home the top honors over the past 20 years.  Although the contest is open to ASP World Tour surfers, due to strict World Tour rules, most of the guys refrain from partaking in the event.

This year’s event provided the same goodwill and bro harmony that it has set out to for all these years.  We look forward to seeing another great show next year.
