The WQS 6 Star Prime, Reef Hawaiian Pro continued on Saturday at Haleiwa. A surprise bump in the swell showed in the morning, giving a noticeable jump in wave height from Friday’s heats. A crossover swell from the north made for challenging conditions with a shifting lineup and a lot of current flowing through the contest area. Event organizers decided to run through the rest of Round 3, then jump over to the start of the women’s event. With improving conditions throughout the morning, many wondered why the men’s event didn’t continue into Round 4, but unfortunately for the men, and fortunately for the women, the decision was made before the improvement in swell and jump in size took effect.
Saturday’s standouts and winners were World Tour surfers, Timmy Reyes (USA), Dayyan Neve (AUS), Jordy Smith (ZAF); local Hawaiian boys, Dustin Cuizon, Charlie Carroll, Kevin Sullivan and Hank Gaskell; former World Tour surfer, Yuri Sodre (BRA); Adam Melling (AUS); Rudy Palmboom (ZAF); Wiggolly Dantas (BRA); and Alain Riou (PYF).
Bowing out on Saturday were World Tour surfers, Heitor Alves (BRA) and Benn Dunn (AUS); former World Tour surfers, Eric Rebiere (FRA) and Phillip MacDonald (AUS); Matt Wilkinson (AUS); Leigh Sedley (AUS); Ruben Gonzalez (PRT); Jean da Silva (BRA); Austin Ware (USA); Pablo Paulino (BRA); Hugo Savalli (REU); and Shaun Gossmann (AUS).
Though Saturday’s waves far exceeded expectations, the swell is expected to drop by Sunday morning, with no new major swells on the immediate horizon. With 8 days left in the event window, we’re sure to see another swell turn up before the final day. Tune in to the event website for the 7:30 call.
