Rio Pro Surf International recap

The Rio Pro Surf International 2008 contest wrapped up this morning in the corner at Arpoador.  Local Brazilian, Simao Romao won a narrow victory over Saffo former World Tour surfer, Greg Emslie.  Imagine that… a Brazilian winning in Brazil!?!?!  The victory will certainly push Simao up in the rankings from his current place of 45th on the WQS, while Greg Emslie is also going to see himself get a bump into the safe zone, moving up a few spots up from his current 17th.  The day started off with the Quarterfinals, where Simao Romao stomped fellow Brazilian Bernardo Miranda; local boy, Willian Cardoso topped German Wunderkind, Marlon Lipke by half a point, crushing Marlon’s hopes of a victory in Brazil, yet still giving him enough points to bump him up a notch in the rankings; Greg Emslie took out Hawaiian, Dustin Barca; and Tahitian, Michel Bourez continued his heat winning streak, pushing himself further into the top 15 with his victory over Floridian former World Tour competitor, Gabe Kling, who will also see his number rise with this Quarterfinal finish.  The Semifinals had eventual event winner Simao Romao barely squeak by fellow Brazo, Willian Cardoso by one-tenth of a point; while Greg Emslie posted a more decisive win over Michel Bourez, winning a berth in the finals.  Though the level of surfing was quite impressive throughout the event, the wave itself proved a lackluster forum for world class surfing.  Stay tuned for the rankings shift in the next day or so, and get ready for a series of back to back, big point events, beginning with the 6 Star Prime, La Santa Surf Pro in the Canaries, and the 6 Star, Maresia Surf International in Santa Catarina, Brazil, both running simultaneously from October 14th - 19th.  In the next few weeks, we should have a better picture of who exactly will make the 2009 class of World Tour qualifiers.
