The Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach is the second of three events in the women’s race for the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing title, as well as the second to last event on the 2008 Women’s World Tour.
The World Tour ladies showed top form in the last event, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, which was the first event in the Triple Crown and the last event in the Women’s WQS season. Hawaiian supergirl, Carissa Moore took the win, dominating every one of her heats throughout the event. Coming in second was seven time World Champ and current World Tour number 3, Layne Beachley. Layne announced her intentions to retire from fulltime professional surfing a while back, meaning this is her last full season run at Sunset Beach, one of two more chances to top Carissa Moore this year, should Carissa get through the trials, and a chance to take home one last World Title, as well as one last Triple Crown win. At the same time, we can expect to see current number 1, Steph Gilmore (AUS) and number 2, Sofia Mulanovich putting up a big fight for the title.
It will be great seeing Layne give it her all, with nothing to lose out at Sunset, and Honolua Bay. Layne last took home a win at Sunset in 2000, while there wasn’t a women’s World Tour event held there from 2001 through 2005. Sofia Mulanovich (PER) took the win at Sunset in 2007 and Melanie Bartels (HAW) in 2006.
