The ladies lucked out on Friday, as they were given the go ahead to resume competition at the 2009 Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast, presented by LG Mobile. Event organizers decided to delay the continuation of the men’s Quiksilver Pro for the day, allowing the ladies to run through a few rounds of competition in increasingly favorable conditions.
2008 World Tour number 9, Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS) and event wildcard, Ashleigh Smith (AUS) were the first eliminations of the 2009 Women’s World Tour, with both surfers falling in Round 2. Round 3 saw more eliminations, with New Zealand rookie, Paige Hareb topping Amee Donohue (AUS); Brazilian rookie, Bruna Schmitz narrowly taking down Sam Cornish (AUS); Chelsea Hedges (AUS) beating Jacqueline Silva (BRA); World Champ, Steph Gilmore taking out Hawaiian, Megan Abubo; young Hawaiian rookie, Coco Ho beating world number 2, Silvana Lima (BRA); Rebecca Woods (AUS) topping Aussie rookie, Sally Fitzgibbons; Melanie Bartels (HAW) taking down Saffa, Rosanne Hodge; and former World Champ, Sofia Mulanovich (PER) taking out rookie stunner, Alana Blanchard (HAW).
The Quarterfinals saw four more eliminations, with Paige Hareb taking out Bruna Schmitz in an all rookie matchup; Steph Gilmore taking out Chelsea Hedges; rookie, Coco Ho comboing Rebecca Woods; and Melanie Bartels narrowly defeating defending event champ, Sofia Mulanovich.
When competition resumes, we’ll jump right into the Semifinals, with Paige Hareb facing off against Steph Gilmore and Coco Ho taking on fellow Hawaiian, Melanie Bartels.
