Slater taken OUT at Bells Beach by Owen Wright
Nine-time ASP World Tour Champ Kelly Slater was sliced and diced at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, courtesy of Aussie up-and-comer, Owen Wright. In a lackluster heat, the Rip Curl wild card was able to eke out at .83 point difference, finishing the heat with 14.67 (but good enough to best Slater.) To his credit, Wright did make the best of the waves that came his way, with a pair of nice rides, and a barrel he came oh-so-close to pulling through. (Had Wright made it all the way, it would have been a decisive victory - he won with a 7.67 for the effort) Slater showed signs of frustration as he rode the whitewash back to shore after the 13.83 finish for the heat. After all, by this time last season, Slater had the two events Down Under in the bag.
In the case of Owen Wright, he’s now taken out both Dane Reynolds and Kelly Slater at Bells, and will be looking forward to round 3.
