Through a mixture of public announcements and message board buzz, the world is now aware that Lost will be releasing a run of their boards using Firewire’s technology. While this is great news for Firewire (and possibly a lifesaver, as they have recently had to move operations from Australia to Thailand to cut costs), how will it affect the perception of Lost? Will other shapers try to cut similar deals? Will Firewire become the new generic future shape, like a new surftech, Aviso or Salomon (R.I.P.)? How will it affect top rider Taj Burrow? Will we start seeing his actual shaper’s logo on Firewires? Could this see the return of Webber to Taj’s camp? And on the Lost side of the transaction, will we see Cory Lopez, Chris Ward or any of their other biggies start riding Lost boards built with the Firewire technology? The future of professional surfing is looking fast and flexible with parabolic balsa rails. To be continued…
