When looking at the faces on tour today and the top guy, Kelly Slater in particular, it got me thinking, how many of the guys that are on the World Tour today were on the World Tour back in 1998? Of course a few guys have dropped off and requalified during that period. Kelly even retired for a few years there. Then 2001 was a tragic year in the world and on the World Tour, with the September 11th attacks and the truncated World Tour season. Many guys were dropped from tour who likely would have made a stellar comeback in the back half of the season, and CJ Hobgood was left with the abbreviated world title which will forever bear an asterisk next to his name. So who was around back in 1998 and what was their ranking compared to today?
Some interesting facts: Of the top 45 in 2008, only 7 guys were on tour back in 1998. 1998 was rookie year for Taj Burrows and Andy Irons. For Mick Campbell, Neco Padaratz and Danny Wills, it was their sophomore year on tour. 1998 was the year Kelly took his sixth (6th) world title.
Let’s see who’s still around ten years from now.
