The 2009 World Tour truly marks the age of Euro ascendance. While the results may not play out quite like the conflict between Ricky Bobby and Jean Girard in Talladega Nights, the influx of European surfers on the World Tour next year will be felt. There will be a total of seven (yes, 7) European surfers on the Dream Tour in 2009, originating from France, Spain, Portugal, Tahiti, and even Germany, yes… Germany (though he was born and raised in Portugal).
Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Miky Picon (FRA) have both requalified via their performance on the 2008 World Tour, finishing at 10th and 21st in the rankings. Tiago Pires (PRT), though he failed to requalify through the 2008 World Tour, has won another chance for 2009 through his performance on the WQS, where he came in 13th in the final rankings. Aritz Aranburu (EUK) has has been granted an ASP injury wildcard seat on the 2009 tour, though he fell several spots short of requalifying. Everyone’s favorite Portuguese surfer of German blood Marlon Lipke, was granted an ASP wildcard seat for 2009, after finishing the 2008 WQS season one spot shy of qualifying, after remaining in the top 15 for nearly the whole season. Michel Bourez of Tahiti and Tim Boal of France won their seats on the 2009 tour the old fashioned way, by slugging it out from trials to finals on the WQS.
Look for a big push from team Euro in 2009, and perhaps even a few more 2010 World Tour qualifiers, given the tremendous talent coming out of the old world.
