Tiago Pires pulls out of Pipeline

Top Portugese surfer, Tiago Pires was forced to pull out of Pipeline today, due to a nagging back injury. The good news, Tiago has already requalified through the WQS and did not need a strong finish at Pipeline to requalify for tour. The bad news, Marlon Lipke (DEU), the lone WQS surfer who could have qualified for the 2009 World Tour if Tiago double qualified, is now forced to do another season on the WQS.  This was obviously a difficult decision for Tiago, since Marlon, a German national, was born and raised in Portugal and considers Tiago a fellow countryman and friend.

Pulling out of his Round 2 heat, Tiago was replaced by local Hawaiian and 2009 World Tour surfer, Kekoa Bacalso.  This pitted Kekoa against fellow Hawaiian, Makuakai Rothman in heat 14.  Kekoa handily defeated his fellow local surfer, but was then put down by top Brazilian surfer, Adriano de Souza in Round 3.

Tiago showed a few moments of brilliance in his competitive surfing this year, earning his stripes on tour.  He took a 3rd place finish in the Rip Curl Somewhere in Indo contest and a 9th place finish in the Billabong Pro Mundaka, showing that he has what it takes to top the big dogs.  We’ll all wish him a quick recovery and look forward to seeing him on tour again next year.
