I failed to realize the true significance of Rafael Pereira’s win in the ASP World Qualifying Series 2 Star Movistar Pro that wrapped up south of Lima, Peru this past weekend. According to the man behind the numbers, my idol and the guy who keeps track of stuff like this, Al Hunt, WQS Tour Manager, Rafael Pereira’s win in Peru makes him the very first Venezuelan to win a WQS event.
While Venezuela has yet to produce a serious contender for a seat on the World Tour, Rafael’s win in Peru is an indication of the talent that the country is spawning. He will find himself in good company with fellow countryman, Magnum Martinez, a serious WQS campaigner who currently finds himself in 12th place in the rankings at this very early point in the season.
Rafael’s win not only garners him 500 points and a $5,000 payday, but it also sets a WQS record and secures Venezuela as a viable and up-and-coming competitive force on the WQS. Congratulations again to Rafael Pereira for his record setting win!
