I remember watching Shane Herring smoke Slater in the Coke Classic in Narrabeen back in ‘92. He was the next big thing out of Australia. He rose to 3rd in the world, posted a few big wins and results, did a few amazing photo shoots (I remember shots of him surfing the Great Barrier Reef) and then completely disappeared from the limelight. What happened to him? How did he fall off the pro tour? Where is he now? Internet and personal sources point to everything from early career burnout to singling out certain unsavory individuals who led him down a path of drink, drugs and personal destruction. Rumors abound about him spending years away from the water, but Dee Why locals say he’s back in the lineup, sick as ever. Whatever the cause, wherever he went… it seems like he’s still charging:
