Women’s Reef Hawaiian Pro - Saturday recap
The women’s portion of the Reef Hawaiian Pro got underway on Saturday, officially kicking off the start of action for the first women’s event in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing. After running the final 6 heats of Round 3 in the men’s event, the women’s contest began in waves that were quite a bit bigger than the waves for Friday’s men’s event.
The women’s event started with a unique, winner takes all wildcard round of 6 contestants, where the young and extremely talented local girl, Carissa Moore dominated her all Hawaiian heat. Round 1 continued with the 6 contestant heat format, with the top 3 competitors in each heat advancing. Making it through to Round 2 were Claire Bevilacqua (AUS), Claudia Goncalves (BRA), Erica Hosseini (USA), Laura Enever (AUS), Coco Ho (HAW), Ornella Pellizzari (ARG), Sarah Beardmore (AUS), Kyla Langen (USA), Tammy Lee Smith (ZAF), Carissa Moore (HAW), Lee Ann Curren (FRA) and Bethany Hamilton (HAW). Carissa Moore and Bethany Hamilton were the stars of Round 1; Carissa with her big swooping turns and hacks, and Bethany with her uncanny ability to outsurf most of the two-armed world.
Round 2 switched over to a 4 contestant heat format, with the top 2 contestants advancing. Entering the field in Round 2 were top seeded ASP Women’s WQS surfers and Women’s World Tour surfers. Winning their heats and moving on to the Quarterfinals were Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), Bruna Schmitz (BRA), Claire Bevilacqua (AUS), Melanie Bartels (HAW), Coco Ho (HAW), Laura Enever (AUS), Samantha Cornish (AUS), Courtney Conlogue (USA), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), Layne Beachley (AUS), Kyla Langen (USA), Rebecca Woods (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW), Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), Alana Blanchard (HAW) and Silvana Lima (BRA).
When competition resumes, we will see the continuation of the 4 contestant format, where winners and runner-ups from Round 2 will face off in the Quarterfinals. Stay tuned to the event website for updates, recaps and all the live action.
