What a difference a contest makes! With just the O’Neill World Cup left in this season’s World Qualifying Series lineup, you would think that most of the top 15 were a lock. Think again. Following the results of the Reef Hawaiian Pro, we’ve seen some significant change in the WQS top 15.
First and foremost was the ascension of Tahitian star, Michel Bourez, who took home a win at the Reef, and moved from outside the top 15 to 2nd in the rankings. Also moving into the top 15 were Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Dustin Barca (HAW) and Jihad Khodr (BRA). Moving out of the top 15 were Patrick Gudauskas (USA), Phillip MacDonald (AUS), Hizunome Bettero (BRA) and Simao Romao (BRA). Otherwise, the top 15 shifted slightly with Nic Muscroft (AUS) bumping up to number 8, while the rest of the pack moved backwards in varying degrees.
With the O’Neill World Cup set to kick off on Monday, with a probable start day of Tuesday, we’re likely to see a few more heads roll and a few more dreams made, as the rankings are apt to shuffle again following the final contest of the season. Most of the top 15 will be fighting to maintain their seats on the 2009 World Tour, while many outside the top 15 still have a shot at glory. A win at Sunset Beach, with a 3000 point 1st place total, could put any number of guys in slots 16 through 30, into the top 15. Be sure to tune in to the O’Neill World Cup this week and watch as the drama unfolds.
