Another round of 6 star events, another reshuffling of the guys in the WQS top 15. Let’s take a look at the who’s in and who’s out following the Estoril Coast Pro in Portugal and the Onbongo Pro in Brazil.
Californian, Nathaniel Curran and Aussie, Chris Davidson continue to lead the rankings at numbers 1 and 2, respectively. Otherwise, a lot of shuffling happened within the top 15. Floridian, Gabe Kling jumped from 9th to 3rd after his second place finish in Portugal. Top Fronchie, Tim Boal dropped from 3rd to 5th, while Aussie, Drew Courtney fell from 4th to 7th. Californian, Patrick Gudauskas fell from 6th to 11th, while Aussie former World Tour surfer Josh Kerr jumped from 7th to 4th. Saffo former World Tour surfer, Greg Emslie stayed put at number 8. German upstart, Marlon Lipke jumped from 12th to equal 9th with David Weare of South Africa, who fell from 5th to equal 9th. Aussie, Phil MacDonald fell two spots from equal 10th to 12th, while fellow Aussie, Nic Muscroft dropped from equal 10th to 14th.
Moving into the top 15 after the last round of contests are Brazilians, Simao Romao and Hizunome Bettero, who have bumped Tahitian, Michel Bourez and Hawaiian, Dustin Barca out of the safe zone. Bourez and Barcawill have two more major opportunities to shine their way back into the top 15 in Hawaii, where both are quite comfortable in the challenging conditions. Also sitting on the cusp are Brazilian, Jadson Andre in 18th, Aussie, Yadin Nicol in 19th and Brazilian World Tour back-of-packer, Jihad Khodr in 20th.
With the upcoming back to back 6 Star Prime WQS events in Hawaii, we may see more surfers move into and out of the top 15. All is not lost for those surfers in the next 20 spots, if they can put together some significant heat wins. Tune in this week and next for the 4 Star Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach, and stay tuned for all the action as the tour heads into the big point Hawaiian leg next month.
