Surf Spot Review: Zuma Beach (L.A.)

Zuma2

Three miles of beautiful sand? Check. More barreling peaks than you can shake your stick at? Check.  Summertime crowds so intense it’ll make you wanna dunk your head in a porta-potty? Make that a big fat check. Zuma has it all: great surf, plenty of parking, and actual sunbathing girls. Its sandy shoreline is exposed to nearly every possible swell angle, and the waves can get pretty good from time to time, offering up steep take offs and the occasional barrel. Location: Heading north on PCH, … [Read more...]

Lightning Bolt: Checkin’ in with the Original Surf Brand

Lightning Bolt Logo

The bolt, we love the bolt, and the bolt is back!  Lightning Bolt was one of the original surf brands, founded in Hawaii in the early 1970s by Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley.  You may remember some images of the iconic Lightning Bolt boards, like the one pictured below.  After a hiatus of sorts, Lightning Bolt was re-launched in 2009 with the help of surf legend Jonathan Paskowitz. The company reached its prime in the '70s and '80s, but in the mid-80’s the company changed ownership.  … [Read more...]

Scratching the Surface is Out! Movie Review

Julian Wilson Scratching the Surface

We were stoked to check out an advance screening of Julian Wilson's new flick, Scratching The Surface, and it's pretty sick stuff (see our recent interview with Julian here, he basically took last year off to film). Scratching the Surface doesn't have a big storyline, it's pure surf adrenaline with some of the sickest surf shots you'll see -- backed up with one of the best music soundtracks.  You will be amped after you watch this movie.  The movie chronicles Julian and crew (Dane, Taj, Dusty, … [Read more...]

Surf Spot Review: Staircase & Heavens L.A.

Heavens

With such descriptive names, one would think Heavens was an idyllic surfer’s paradise (complete with 12 foot barrels and sunbathing Victoria Secret models), and that Staircase actually had a staircase, but alas, the names are kind of misleading. Heavens is unfortunately supermodel free, and there are no stairs at Staircase. To top it off, these spots are mostly flat during the year. However, when the North Bay is hit by a large SW or NW swell, and every single spot between County Line and Malibu … [Read more...]

Bubble Gum Surf Wax: Product Review

DSC_0031

With the water temp starting to peak here in New England, I figured it would be the perfect time to do a wax review.  My good friends at Bubble Gum Surf Wax hooked me up with a bunch of bars and some of their special wax remover to put to the test.  With team riders like Rob Machado, Gabe Kling, Tonio Benson, Freddie P., and JMJ, I figured it was worth checking out. To be honest, I use cold water wax about 80% of the year but for a few short months, I have the opportunity to use a cool or even … [Read more...]

Indo Jax Surf School spreads the stoke!

DSC05345

If your family doesn't surf at all, there is pretty much no better way to learn how to surf than by getting lessons from a surf camp. And if  you're lucky enough that you do have a family who surfs, have a house on the beach, and were given a surfboard for your third birthday, then let me get this out of the way:  I truly envy you and your craaazy ludicrous good fortune... can your family adopt me?   Right, so... anyways, surf camps are great for those people with no surfing background whatsoever … [Read more...]

Surfing Barbados – paradise found

The world headquarters for Malibu Rum sits on the west coast of Barbados, 100 feet from the Caribbean sea. The water there is flat as lake, as if the surfing gods punished the spot for knocking off the name of a secret spot in California. And while Malibu rum is no Barbados treaure, plenty of surfing treasures can be found on the island. Just up the coast is Duppies. A diagonal shot across the island is the world class Soup Bowl. As if that's not enough, Malibu (in reverse) can be found with the … [Read more...]

KOOK by Peter Heller, Book Review

KOOK Book

"You f%cking kook, get out of the water!...were you born on planet kook?!".  The answer is yes, at least initially.  This book was written by a Kook, Peter Heller is his name.  He never surfed a day in his life until he was 45yrs old and after getting yelled at (above) after snaking some dudes at Huntington Beach, he hits the road for 2 months.  He surfs every day, mostly in Mexico and ends up at Mex Pipe, aka Puerto Escondido and then the question is he is surfer, or just a guy that surfs....or … [Read more...]
