Scratching the Surface is Out! Movie Review

Julian Wilson Scratching the Surface

We were stoked to check out an advance screening of Julian Wilson's new flick, Scratching The Surface, and it's pretty sick stuff (see our recent interview with Julian here, he basically took last year off to film). Scratching the Surface doesn't have a big storyline, it's pure surf adrenaline with some of the sickest surf shots you'll see -- backed up with one of the best music soundtracks.  You will be amped after you watch this movie.  The movie chronicles Julian and crew (Dane, Taj, Dusty, … [Read more...]

Surf Movie Review: Storm Surfers New Zealand, a Sick Flick

bigwave

We at Dailystoke.com got our hands on an advance copy of Storm Surfers New Zealand, which is coming out Wednesday on the Discovery Channel.  Stoked!!  We love Storm Surfers and this film is, well, pretty sick….and Tom Carroll and Ross Clark-Jones are, well, pretty sick too.    OK, OK…so to get to our surf spot today we need to, uh…fly a bazillion miles, then make our way up river for what seems like another bazillion miles, then get through some rapids, then do some helicopter recon missions, … [Read more...]

Dudes, Jeff Spicoli is back…Surf Legend Doc Paskowitz Inspires New Movie Starring Sean Penn

doc

Ever washed dishes in the ocean?  Imagine your dad is a doctor and one day, he packs up the family and you all begin traveling around from beach to beach. You're basically trained to be a champion surfer every day of your life, even sticking to a strict diet of no sugar and no fat. Except for the diet, it sounds too good to be true. This is what the nine children and wife of Doc Paskowitz experienced over 30 years ago. The whole family packed up and lived together in a camper in poverty, and … [Read more...]

Sprout: Surfing Movie Review

sprout

Recently, my parents (I'm still a lucky Grom who lives with my mom and pop) started subscribing to Netflix, and amazingly enough, they stock a pretty impressive collection of surf movies! One thing led to another, and eventually I opened my mailbox, totally stoked to see "Sprout" waiting patiently for it's next client, who will no doubt: Pop it into their DVD player, rewind it a few times, pause it for an hour while they do something else, and use as a coaster. "Sprout" is directed and produced by … [Read more...]

Dear Kate Bosworth

Dear Kate. I loved Blue Crush. Don't you think, some six years after release, it's time for the sequel? Please don't make us wait like the Endless Summer II. … [Read more...]

Have you got a surfing movie that needs some profile?

If you're a surfing filmmaker or know of one, we're looking for surfing movies to review. We've been contacted by a number of great filmmakers, and have done reviews of One Track Mind, the new film by Chris Malloy, Chasing the Dream, a story about the surfing team at Huntington Beach High School among other films. More movies are on the way. That said, we've also found some beauts, like Surfing 50 States, and we'll be profiling this new and creative movie soon. So if you've got something in the can … [Read more...]

Highwater: A Film Review of a Movie I Have Never Seen

Highwater is the newest film from the Brown family dynasty. Bruce Brown's son, Dana, is back on the surf beat after Step Into Liquid to document the final leg of the pro-surfing tour in Oahu, The Vans Triple Crown. The movie is set to release sometime in the Spring this year. The trailer is up. The tension is high. And Pontz has the only "insider" knowledge around. Have you been waiting for the greatest surf movie ever put on film? With the most epic barrels? The most epic wipeouts? The most … [Read more...]

“The Present” Premiere: Fated to Win an Alaia?

dale_webster1

As tradition holds, swag must be raffled off at a surf movie premiere and Thomas Campbell is not one to balk at tradition. But this was not just any raffle at The Present premiere. For one, the ethereal Kassia Meador glided onto stage to assist with selecting tickets (making the event worth the price of entry). Kassia helped to balance the stutters and missteps of Campbell. Additionally, I felt pretty alright with walking away swagless because Kassia and I shared the same air for a short time. The … [Read more...]

“The Present” in San Francisco–A Surf Movie Review

thepresent

March 27th was the first day of Spring in San Francisco. A hot sun angling toward the Pacific and the small tickle of wind on the brow demanded that everyone in the city leave their apartments and head for the nearest grassy park. These kinds of days are few and not to be wasted. With some tallboys in street cozies, a couple friends and I swaggered from the outer Richmond through Golden Gate Park to the Victoria Theater in the Mission to watch the premiere of Thomas Campbell's newest 16mm surf/art … [Read more...]

Record Yourself

On the second day of the swell that just hit, a friend and I hit the waves, this time with a non-surfer and his video camera. Not only was this a chance to get some footage for our upcoming music video (aww yeah), but it also gave us a chance to check out our surf style. Best thing we ever did!! Although I was slightly disappointed with my stance and totally thought I had caught bigger waves than I actually did, it really gave me a good idea of things I needed to work on. The most frustrating part … [Read more...]
