Surfing is becoming way too popular in California, and there’s no “chances are” about it. You’ve been dropped in on countless times. It’s a session killer when you’ve been looking for a bomb all morning, and then some barney drops in with you. When the waves are sh!t, it’s different. No one really gives a damn, and most of the time it’s almost funny. But when the waves are pumping, and the line up is completely slammed. People get a little pissed. I know I do, and it’s not like I’m some road raging idiot or anything. I’ve just been waiting patiently, avoided paddling for waves that are already clearly handled, and then finally when I get mine: Some moron drops in with me! Do you just push him down with your arms? That seems kind of violent, and if he’s grown chances are there’s going to be some consequences. So if have some basic surfing talent, here’s the proper way.
As demonstrated with Kelly Slater at Rincon beach…
Okay you see him, and it’s obvious he’s not kicking out. Time to give him the old Rincon nose clip! You wanna come down the face of the wave to cut him off, but avoid hitting the rail of your surfboard into his. The goal here is to clip the nose of his surfboard with your leg. So don’t come flying down the face like a bat out of hell. All that’s going to come of that is surfboard dings, and possibly getting punched in the nose. Ride the tail of your board, stall, and keep it mellow. This is funny, and whoever’s watching on the beach is gonna laugh. You’re totally showing off at this point.
Once you’ve spotted him, and caught his line. Come down the face of the wave aiming to intercept him at the nose, as if you were cutting in front of him in line. Your board should already be at a lower angle, because your driving down the face of the wave with more momentum. This is when you wanna make the impact. If you can manage it, do this all out of your periferia vision. He might not even notice what is happening, and think it’s all an accident.
Okay so your hitting the nose of his surfboard with the back of your leg at this point. Once you feel the collision you wanna then go into a bottom turn. This keeps your momentum going, and prevents you yourself from falling. You don’t wanna be there when he comes up. Ideally you want him to see you ripping the wave he thought was his. Plus when he falls forward you won’t be there to catch his forehead with your rail.
Presto! He’s looking like an idiot, and you’ve finally got a wave to rip.
It helps to do a sick off the top or something afterwards to further more make him look like a kook. If people are watching this will also help keep others from making the same mistake. Why? Because you totally rip dude, and it’s foolish for other kooks to drop in on you!
Here it is in action at about the 1:37 mark…
WP Cumulus Flash tag cloud by Roy Tanck requires Flash Player 9 or better.
Ah that’s all good but it doesn’t show slater being dropped in on, rather looks the other way to me. anyhow there’s a better much classier way. When you come from behind you just put one foot on the drop-in’s rail and over they go.
Agree with above, seems Kelly may have done the dropping -in !!. Do those stickers on your board cause you to lose your manners?.
you can see where Slater has just dropped in and that guy is already on the wave. the other guy was stalled in the bottom and probably not gonna do much with it, so i can see why slater would wanna snake it but for him to turn it around and try, being a pro surfer, to humiliate a beginner and accuse him of dropping in because that’s what he feels like doing himself and then be so delusional as to post about it is an embarrassment to the man and the sport. slater thinks he humiliated the guy he cut off but from my perspective he thoroughly humiliated himself.
i can see why it gets like that because its a scarce resource.
especially in ca.
people who have a business interest in the growth of the sport or are just generous shoudl be appalled by the typical pro attitude.
people who dont actually have to deal with pros and arent beginner should perhaps be grateful that there are so many assholes surfing - it discourages beginners and keeps people out of the water forever.
more waves for me and i dont have to be childishly unsportsmanlike to anybody.
Kelly did the dropping in and he does it alot from vids ive seen.
GO BACK TO FLORIDA!!!!
Or he can just hop on his jet and go find another perfect point somewhere else.
That poor donkey probably waited all winter to get a good wave at the con.
Who cares that Slater rips!
Did he not get enough waves last year?????
If you could see the whole ride, that guy dropped in on Slater and he went around him. That’s where the vid starts. When the guy (who was dropping in on people all day) wouldn’t kick out, Slater gave him a little nudge. Simple. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.
Kelly can surf anywhere, so go somewhere else and let beginers have a chance at an epic wave. Ability does not give the right to more wave, move over for others.
