The Girl's Guide to Surfing Book ImageWe're taking a poll….do surf chicks need their own surf how-to-guide?  And is it just for chick wannabee surfers?

Anyway, we checked out this book A Girl's Guide to Surfing by Andrea McCloud who hails from San Diego and wrote this book while on an 8-month surf excursion through Baja, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa and Panama.  Cool.  The book is basically a beginners guide to surfing, with some very cool '50s style design and graphics which covers everything from getting started to surf etiquette….with some chick-specific things thrown in like:

  • A History of the Wahine: from Pele the hawaiian goddess, to Marge Calhoun in the '50s, to modern day hot wahines like Kassia Meador.
  • A chick approach to road trip etiquette: no farting, talk about bikini waxes etc etc…
  • And what to do if your older brother waxes your board with soap….it actually happened to Carla Rowland, as she explains in the book.

This is really a good beginner's book for girls, or dudes.  It covers everything you need to know, and is well written and to the point.

What a great way to help girls get more involved, I’m so excited about this. When I was young living not close to the ocean but visiting family on the coast during the summer months. Everything I learned was from the boys, and as time went on I found my own style.

  4. I like the graphics. Looks like a useful & interesting read.

it could be good. i’m still a new surfer, so i’m always intrigued by anything surf related.

but the best way to learn to surf is by getting out there and having someone who knows what they’re doing TELL YOU what u’re doing wrong…

  7. The book looks very interesting. I would have read it before I went surfing in El Salvador. The waves were amazing when I went and the water was so warm. I think the book could be a good read.

I recently went surfing in Tofino, home the O’Neill Cold Water Classic surf competition, the most northern surf competition in the world.I stayed at a posh villa on the surf beach and found a copy of this girl’s guide to surfing in the hotel. I love this book. I found most useful the information in it on how to read the waves, what makes a good surf and how to define certain terms. Locals told me the waves were “mushy”…I had no idea what that meant until I read the book. I liked how the book explained the technical and slang terms used in surfing.
It is a great way to get up to speed fast. I’ve tried surfing in various countries around the world, but still feel like a beginner. I think this book could take me to the next level. I was out there showing my family members (including my 72 year old father) how to surf. If I had a chance to read the whole book, I’m sure I’d have some better pointers for them.
I like the idea of having a book geared to girls. It is less intimidating. Actually when I picked it up off the coffee table, I thought to myself, “Why didn’t I think of this? I should write a book on surfing for girls.”

I actually think this could be a really good idea. I surf and already know all the lingo but some tips are always good as far as style and how do deal with dead hair and random style problems that come along with surfing :) otherwise, if girls are REAL surfers, they wont really need to be reminded of the basics.. like HOW to surf or how NOT to look like a kook :)

  11. Hello! That is an amazing resource! I’m glad I started to visit your blog, it’s quite interesting. And this article is no exception, appreciate value you give for free! Best, Aleks

As a wannabe girl surfer I think this is a really good idea! People who have known how to surf from a young age may think that a book that spells surfing out so simply is a bit of a joke, but if you have no friends or family that surf guidance is hard to come by. This book could give me and many other begginers the kick start we need =)
