BlueGreen is a thought-provoking movie that asks the fundamental question of life: is living on a coast and being close to an ocean, just a better life than being landlocked? (yes) Are coast people and surfers just happier and healthier? (yup) Is living near the beach just the way life was meant to be? (yup again) and if so, how does one accomplish that if you aren't lucky enough to be a pro surfer with all the loot and free time to travel the world? (read on…)
Keith Malloy, Layne Beachley, and others offer up their thoughts in the movie…and Keith Malloy is in some ways the great irony. Here is a dude that basically quit pro surfing, as pro surfing itself became a “job” that took him away from what he thought surfing was meant to be in the first place.
- He says he thought early on “why don't I just keep surfing as hard as I can, and then I can just surf, instead of pounding nails or working some office job….and in doing that and being a professional surfer and competing, I guess I got wrapped up trying to impress other people, rather than enjoying the experience myself. …and “after 4 or 5 years on tour, I realized… this is totally consuming my life and I am not surfing for the reasons I love surfing. It all made sense for me to quit at that point.”

Layne Beachley is an interesting contrast, she stayed on tour as dominated, but unlike Keith, put up with all the tour B.S. but never lost her perspective on what mattered….
- Layne says all the “contest hoopla distances me from the ocean, I think its a real distraction, I call this the circus, I think its great for sufing and great for the promotion…but this environment exhausts me and draws the life out of me….and going back into the surf, and into the ocean brings my life back into me.”
The movie shows has interviews with pro sufers, but also Rabbis, life guards, surf instructors and everyday people. They all have to figure out how to make it happen, but in the end they all do what they need to do to be near the beach and surf.
