First let me start by saying that I am, and always will be, a surfer at heart. However, I also believe that you can’t consider yourself a complete waterman unless you can body surf. After recently making my first alaia I realized that it was better off being ridden prone than standing up. However, I just couldn’t get it going fast enough to get up and planning. I decided it was the perfect time to reach out to the boys at DaFIN to see if they could help. DaFIN is one of the world’s leading swim fin manufacturers and one of the Hawaiian lifeguards favorite swim fins of choice. They also have one of the most radical looking shapes out there!
The fins were easy to slip on and comfy on the feet. The unique shape isn’t just to make the fins look cool; it offers a wide and short contoured blade that has two ridged channels running down the outside edges. These help channel water more efficiently and provide a great amount of propulsion.
They didn’t come off once in the heavy beach break closeouts I was in and they made my wipeouts easily visible to those on the beach with their signature red and yellow colors. I got up and planning on the alaia almost immediately and the fins gave me the extra control I needed to stay right in the pocket. I also made a valiant attempt at body surfing and managed to get barreled on a 15 or 20 yard bomb before it drained out from under me and left me eating half the sand on the beach! I was most surprised how easy it was to get around out of the water with them on; I’m sure with enough practice you can even run in them!
In conclusion, I ended up going out on a day that I never would have considered doing with a board and I had so much fun! It also gave me another way to enjoy the ocean, beat flat spell blues, and stay in shape for the next swell. Although my knees and elbows were bloody and bruised and I was picking sand out of almost everywhere, I have to say, I am almost looking forward to the next the next small wave day. If you don’t have a pair of swim fins yet…GO GET SOME!!!! They are the perfect addition to your quiver and you won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend DaFin brand fins and with names like Brian Keaulana, Mark Cunningham, and Jack McCoy also vouching for them, you can’t go wrong. Thanks for reading and as always….tell a friend.
