We’ve all done it…you pull up to the beach and see a perfect head-high set coming in. You rush to get your suit on, stash your keys, and head down to the break as fast as you can, waxing your board on the way. About half way down, you forget that in the hurry to get into the water, you didn’t apply any sunscreen. You look at the water, then look back at your car, and for some reason, the water usually wins and no sunscreen is applied; you continue your sprint down to the shoreline. Fast forward 1-2 hours into this little dream session…after pulling out of a sweet little right hander you smile big and notice your face feels tight. It’s at this very moment that you kick yourself in the ass…I should have gone back for the sunscreen!!!! The next few days are usually painful and full of weird looks and bad jokes from colleagues. Because of this, I’ve recently started to pay closer attention to skin care. As surfers, we pretty much play on a giant mirror that even on cloudy days, is still radiating the sun’s harmful rays directly at us. With premature skin aging and skin cancer as the leading side effects of long-term unprotected sun exposure, it’s time we all got more serious about sunscreen.
The guys over at beyond coastal share a passion for surfing and skin care and sent us some of their products to test out. Started by a surfer, the company now caters to all outdoor sports/activities but remains true to its surfing roots. They currently sponsor a number of Pros to include Cheyne Magnusson and Pancho Sanchez. All of Beyond Coastal’s sunscreen and lip balm formulas offer broad spectrum protection. Not only do they protect against UVA and UVB rays, each formula contains natural anti-oxidants to fight UV free radicals, which contribute to skin aging and skin cancer.
I used the active SPF 30 formula on my face and the SPF 30 lip balm on my lips for the first test. It was the first really bright/nice day of the Spring and my extra pale winter skin was perfect for testing! When I squeezed out the first bit I thought it was going to be too thick and too white but once I got it on, it absorbed quickly and w
ent on easy. My hands didn’t have that greasy feeling and it didn’t sting when I accidentally got some near my eyes. It stayed on the whole session and came off easy in the shower. The best part is, I didn’t burn! I highly suggest grabbing some of Beyond Coastal’s stuff and be religious about putting it on before you go in the sun. So true! Once I even got blisters on my face!
Skin cancer is no joke! listen to Garage Shaper and use suntan lotion. Beyond Coastal looks good, I use headhunter sunscreen which works well too. Another good review, keep them coming.
How does this compare to headhunters? More gear/product reviews would be awesome!
I’ll reach out to Headhunter’s myself to see if I can get some of their stuff to compare and contrast to. In the mean time, do yourself a favor and go buy some Beyond Coastal lotion and do your own compare and contrast review. I’ll keep the product reviews coming and let me know if there is anything specific you want us to try. Thanks for reading and as always…tell a friend about the Dailystoke!
