No B.S. Review
So we just checked out SURF UK, a book on UK surf spots and the Severn Bore, one of the longest waves in the world. So if you are going to the UK (a) bring your wetsuit so you don't freeze your b*lls off – seriously you will, and (b) you must buy this book because it is THE definitive book on UK surf spots. The author, Alf Alderson, has been researching UK surf spots for 20years and has traveled something like 5,000 miles — 'nuff said, he knows UK surf sh!t.
The book covers all the spots in the UK (see chapters below), but the most interesting part is Severn Bore, which is one of the longest waves in the world. It is basically river surfing, and gets going when swells in the Atlantic (Bristol Channel) surge up the ever-narrowing Severn river. Surfers have been coming to ride the Severn river since the '60s, and the record for longest ride is held by Steve King who apparently rode the wave for 7.5 miles. Yeah, 7.5 miles! It's pretty crazy stuff. The book talks about all the launch points in, but also about all the sh!t you have to try to avoid when surfing this wave — like logs, branches, rocks etc. Those crazy brits — cold and dangerous is how they like it. Thanks Alf, great book.
