About the Global Surf Industries Seaglass Project Tuna by Tom Wegener

I just received my 6’2″ Tuna!!!!! It’s awesome!
My first thoughts when I picked it up was how light it is. It’s made with lightweight technology, and glassed with epoxy resin. So it is super light.
I think it will float like a boat! It’s not very wide, but it’s girthy. The girth should help with catching waves more easily as well as maneuverability. The concave bottom is deep, and the rails are sharp, so that will be interesting to see how it handles in the water.
It looks really cool. It’s nothing like any other board on the beach. It’s completely strait on the sides up until the nose and down until the tail. There is no rocker, but the nose thins out from the bottom to give it a little curve.
The color is really cool, It’s a baby blue and white, half and half lengthwise, looking very retro :)
I can’t wait to get it out on the water!

Got it out today, but the waves were too rough. It’s a whole new experience, like learning to surf all over again. Tomorrow looks flat, so I’ll hope its not too flat, and I’ll try again. Taking family with me to take video.

    .Finally making progress!
Since last post, I was having a real hard time; I was worthless on it. Then I went out Saturday, was in a good mood. Another guy out there recognized the board! He wanted to try it, so I switched boards with him. I was expecting him to nose dive and flip all over like I’ve been doing for over a month; I was wrong. He stood up and made it look easy on the first wave! I watched with admiration(jealousy) as he caught a bunch of waves, surfed it, and had a great time on it. When we switched back, I asked him how he was able to surf it so easily. Turns out he had shaped a couple alaias and already knew how to surf on them. He also said the Tuna is a lot easier. So he gave me some tips on how to surf the Tuna.
When standing up, don’t grab the rails, put your hands on top of the board to push yourself up. Since the board is so much thinner, grabbing the rails creates drag on the sides and makes it very hard to balance. Keep your feet out of the water because a little drag can throw you off.
Rather than popping up fast, stay low on the board until you get down the wave, then it’s better to stand up.
There’s not much else I can say, but if you watch how Jesus, I mean Rob Machado, surfs the alaia you should be able to learn from his stance and everything.

Here’s another video of a guy who’s much better than me.

Rob Machado may indeed be Jesus, as he “walks” on water almost daily!

Any further progress on the Tuna-fication? Really curious to hear what other advice you have on this badboy.

I’ve been trying to be positive about this board up until now, but I can’t take it anymore.
I HATE THIS FREAKING BOARD. Every feature of it makes it SH*T. There is no rocker to make it faster, but it’s really to dive the nose into the water instantly unless you ride it PERFECTLY. It’s thinner rail to rail, and thicker top to bottom to make it have good action, but that just makes it really freaking wobbly unless, of course, you ride it PERFECTLY. There is a little extra in the tail to help you ride into the waves, NOPE, it helps with the instant nose dives.
So, since I don’t surf perfectly, this board is not for me and I F*#KING hate it.

ok, ok, *sigh* I apologized to my baby Tuna and took it out today. It was still nearly impossible in todays choppy conditions, I did manage to catch a few waves and have a good time on it. There were just a few waves that were perfect, and I did manage to catch those waves ok. So when that happens, it is a great feeling.
About if you want to get the board, don’t buy it until you can find someone who will let you try it first. It takes a sh*t ton of commitment and time to get to a point where you can have fun on it.
I’m meeting new people every time I get out there, and I let them try it. A lot of them like it and a lot of them aren’t so into it.

    I’m sorry.
Family and friends have talked me out of giving up on it. As much as it makes me feel like an idiot, I’m gonna keep trying.
I haven’t been able to get any film of myself on it yet, either. I’ll see what I can do.
