A great spot to play volleyball and post up at the beach with the family, but as far as the surf goes don’t expect much. It’s a good beginner spot (aside from the poor water quality) with one of the slowest forming and breaking waves around. It could be 8 foot and pumping at Salt Creek or Trestles, meanwhile Doheny limbers along at a measly thigh high. Longboarders can find some fun nose ride sections on the inside reform after weaving through dozens of windmilling newbies. As the old timers will tell you, back before the late 60’s when Dana Pt Harbor and the breakwater were built, one of the longest right hand points in California used to fire just up the beach to the north. At the very least, Doheny exists as a stark reminder of how important it is to safeguard our coastal playgrounds.
