We’ve seen a number of Honda Fits running around our local beach break, and so far, with no surfboards strapped to the top. They are tiny looking cars that are easy to parallel park and are deceptive - the Honda Fit is incredibly spacious inside. Pictured at left (complete with “hip urban graffiti as a background”), the Fit is pretty cool.
The Honda Fit comes in a number of modes - in “long mode” you can fit a Funshape (god forbid) inside with no problem, let alone your little stick. According to Honda, the front passenger seat of the Fit reclines to create a whopping 7′10″ of space. That’s huge. SUV huge. (There’s even a way to have the front and passenger seats recline to 180 degrees, so that you can sit in the back seat and chillax.) It does mean that you have to leave your friend behind and surf dawn patrol alone, but that’s ok!
The flat top of the Honda Fit makes it ideal for Yakima or Thule racks, or for simply strapping your boards to the roof with foam pads and straps. At 33 miles per gallon in the city and 38 miles per gallon the highway (which highway???!) it’s a very fuel-efficient surfing transportation machine. Automatic transmission starts at around $15,000, and Honda is one of the remaining car companies that still offers leasing through the Honda-owned financing company. We’re stoked to load our surfboards in, or on, the Honda Fit.
One knock on the Honda Fit worth noting: the 2009 model looks like the Toyota Prius, and the roof appears not to be as conducive to strapping boards on top. All in all though, it’s a great choice for a surfing car.
