“It’s his whole philosophy - health, yoga, surfing. Some people are famous for surfing, but he’s broader than that.” That’s the reason Dutch surfer Hanneke Van Ewijk came to get her copy of Laird Hamilton’s new book signed by the author in person at a recent book signing at Barnes and Noble.
Avid readers of DailyStoke.com will know that Laird Hamilton’s new book Force of Nature - Mind, Body, Soul, and, of course, Surfing is a great reference that is more about life and healthy living than it is about surfing, even though surfing is a groundswell throughout. (You can pick up the book at your local Barnes and Noble or online here.) From training, to yoga, to healthy eating, Hamilton covers it all and offers a glimpse at just how great it’s gotta be to be Laird Hamilton!
That fact certainly helped draw a crowd. Indeed, surfers from everywhere were stoked to meet Hamilton in person and chat it up with the famous big wave rider. Ben Ahrens, who runs the MBX surf camp in Montauk, New York said that Hamilton was a personal hero. Noting that Hamilton’s new book has a section detailing all of the injuries he’s sustained over the years of surfing, Ahrens was “reassured to know Laird Hamilton is human! I was pretty interested to know about his whole workout regimen and recovery from injury.” Ahrens, a personal trainer, was also stoked and inspired by Hamilton’s focus on all-round atheleticism.
“If you live to carve,” says Hamilton fan, Bruce Ruiz, “Laird Hamilton is the epitome of the best.” Like Hamilton, Ruiz shares a passion for surfing, kite boarding, windsurfing and sailing. Ruiz was clearly star struck after meeting Hamilton, proof of Hamilton’s status as a surfing legend.
The crowd of around 100 devotees dealt with the ugly weather for the signing. That weather, however, didn’t faze Hamilton. “I don’t mind it all!” he said in an interview with DailyStoke.com. “Hawaii is the rainiest place in the world.” Indeed, Hamilton showed up in flip flops despite the nasty mix outside.
Hamilton fan Van Ewijk brought her 6′2″ surfboard to be autographed.
Said Hamilton on signing the baord: “I hope you’re going to get that board in the water soon!”
Surfers: Check back later this week for DailyStoke.com’s interview with Laird Hamilton, in a new format our readers will dig.
