A 25 year old lifeguard was bitten in half by what’s believed to be a Tiger Shark while riding waves off of Second Beach this weekend. Sikhanyiso Bangilizwe, of Port St. Johns, was sadly mangled by the aggressor, losing his right arm, shoulder, part of his back, and buttock. Poor dude was a member of the Wild Coast Guards, and off duty at the time of attack. They lost another lifeguard, Sibulele Masiza, to the jaws of a shark in January of 2007.
A fellow lifeguard witnessed this year’s attack, and here are some spooky quotes from the source:
“He was catching waves in the water further from where I was and when we passed the waves, I heard his cries. “I saw he was in trouble and the shark on him, I saw blood and I went out of the water to get help.”
“To see him die has made it difficult for me to sleep. I wish I could get pills so that I don’t get troubled. “I am not well, but I will continue to go into the water as a lifeguard.”
“When we went out to the water Bangilizwe was dead, his body was badly injured, we could see his insides - it was the scariest thing I have ever seen.”
What’s up with all the shark attacks lately?! What’s next? A live feeding in the next WCT webcast?! There have been a few times a competing surfer has been chased out of the water by a shark at J-Bay. Taj Burrow, Luke Egan and I believe one of the Hobgood twins. Let’s say Damien…
