A few months back Rusty Preisendorfer put out the “Finless Craft Challenge” to all his shapers as a way to see who could come up with the best surfable, finless surfboard. The original idea was for the boards to be used in a “Hip Hop vs. Hippie” challenge with Jamie O’Brien and Dave Rastovich. (I’ll try and see if I can get anything on whether or not that ended up happening.) But somewhere in the midst of all this, Josh Kerr stopped by the Rusty factory in San Diego and helped himself to this Vortex Converter - a.k.a. “The Board From Hell” - named appropriately by the glasser. Photographer, Sean Brody, and Rusty team rider, Josh Kerr, hooked up the next day for a photo shoot, and from the looks of things it’s “ridable”. (Check the rocker, or rather lack thereof.) You can check out the whole photo set by clicking here. Moves like this typically start with a bottom turn, and even though there’s no real trace of one here, this is still pretty f#ckin’ impressive on a board with no fins. Or is it because that’s Josh Kerr riding it, and the rest of us never would have made it to the shoulder? I don’t know, but check the channels…
