Falkland Islands – going off the surf map

Are you interested in surfing with penguins, dolphins and sea lions, in empty, consistent waves? If you don’t mind a very long trip and the occasional mine field, take a trip to the Falklands, or the Malvinas, as the Argentine’s call them. This British Crown dependency sits in the South Atlantic, just a few hundred miles off the coast of Argentina. A source of diplomatic noise and even war between England and Argentina, the Falklands offer little more than oversized, windswept rocks, unless…. you are a surfer. Locals take great pride in the quality and consistence of the waves, while lamenting the lack of people to share the waves with. The sparsely populated islands of just over 3,000 people is home to just a handful of surfers.

Be sure to take plenty of rubber, as year-round water temperatures are colder than what most surfers face in winter back home. There are no surf shops on the Falklands, so be sure to bring whatever equipment you need, and whatever equipment you wouldn’t mind leaving behind for the locals.

Getting there will be costly and time consuming, but the trip adds to the adventure. Do a little homework online and you’ll find plenty of tourism info on the Falklands, as well as a bit of info on surfing there. Most importantly, get off the surf map and go explore.
