In case you haven’t noticed yet, the house of Rodanthe bites the - (ahem) - sand
East Coast surfers loooooove the Outer Banks. Really, it’s the only place on the Atlantic seaboard that doesn’t suck. We all know that the Outer Banks are a chain of barrier islands and that the continental shelf is steeper right by the banks and, yada yada yada, and by California standards, may be a bit sloppy-joe, but the Outer Banks is our “bread and butter.” You guys out west got Trestles, we got Hatteras. Well, one of the best known spots here is S-turns, a spot right north of the town of Rodanthe, and the coolest thing about this spot besides the dredging barrels is that there’s this house like in the shore break, just hanging out, looking for a good time. Ever seen that movie Nights in Rodanthe? I haven’t (and neither should you have). Well that house is no more. It has been taken by the wrecking ball of the ocean, and now it’s biting the dust (more like sand). I saw the picture of this in the March ‘09 issue of Surfer Magazine on page 128, and I was thinking “I knew it.” So the next time you head out east, don’t expect there to be a big, abandoned house to mark S-turns (the road, remember? S-turns)… who knows, maybe they’ll try to rebuild it or something… if they’re on something…
Editor’s note: Ummm, it turns out that we got some mistaken identity issues going on. Well, this house that fell is not the House of Rodanthe, but the “House of Sea Haven.” The House of Rodanthe is still standing and throwing shakas at all the guys getting shacked right out front. Why do they have to build all of these houses so close to the water? When one falls, you’re like “Ahhh, sinkhole!” Anyways, thank you, trusty reader bryan, for letting me know.
