The past two days here have been spoiled by horrible 40 knot plus offshore arctic winds, making for marginally Surfable conditions on the closest coast and victory at sea conditions elsewhere. I spent Tuesday doing a bit of driving along the southern coast of Iceland, checking spots along the way. The black sand beaches in the south hold a lot of promise, with the right swell direction and substantially less wind. After freezing my butt off checking beach after beach, I decided to head north into the Icelandic hinterland to warm up a bit (in the heat of my rental car). I drove over a range of mountains on one of the more sketchy gravel roads I’ve had the pleasure of driving on, to the foot of one of Iceland’s largest glaciers. Seeing the glacier and it’s nearby snow covered mountain tops trumping the mountains closer to the sea throughout the entirety of my drive proved far too alluring. My offroad journey paid off with a quick tromp in the snow and one of the most amazing views of the blacksand coast. On the way there and back, I took in plenty of waterfalls, lavafields, sheep, cows and horses, mountains, roaring rivers, and even a single lane bridge that could have made for one hell of a game of chicken. Back in Reykjavik, I spent today cafe hopping and tourist shopping. Might see a flurry or two in the wind tonight. Stuck indoors for the moment. Praying for the winds to die down sometime today so I can get myself back in the water. More tomorrow…
