Out There Surfing Movie - Movie Review

Out There is a movie released in 2008 that mashes up surfing and the ocean environment. It’s an impressive collaboration between the movies’ sponsors (including Surfrider) and Teton Gravity Research, the production company. Shot on location in Southern Chile, the Galapagos, Tahiti, California, including Trestles, El Salvador and Hawaii, the film covers a broad swath of endangered surf spots around the world. We’re not just talking pretty waves here, we’re talking pretty waves fed by rivermouths pouring hypodermic needles, plastic garbage and other trash (in the case of El Salvador. Muy malo.) into the lineup.

While Out There highlights the beauty of surfing and the ocean environment juxtaposed against beautiful backdrops, where, if you look closely enough, you’ll see just how badly we have the potential to totally fvck it up. That being said, this movie doesn’t quite make the full pitch. It’s one thing to see crap floating too close to the lineup - it’s quite something else to realize that you and I can actually do something about it. That’s the one shortcoming (and something we want to address at DailyStoke.com) - tie it to the everyday lives of surfers.

That said, if you act now, the producers teamed up with Surfrider so as to provide free memberships to those who buy the two disk set. (The second disk, by the way, features season one of Untracked Surf, from Fuel TV. Surfers taking part in the action include Shane Dorian, Jordy Smith, Maya Garbeira, Herbie Fletcher and Donavan Frankenreiter. Check out Out There.
