Rob Machado - a day in his life
Just like his good friend, Kelly Slater, many of us have watched Rob Machado’s career over the years with an equal mixture of awe, admiration and jealousy. Unlike Slater, Rob’s career took a different path over the past several years, where he has focused more on free surfing, photo and video shoots and the occasional contest, rather than duking it out on the rat race known as the World Qualifying Series. Unlike Bruce Iron’s recent announced retirement, Rob’s decision to leave the tour life was not entirely his own, but we can further cover his complicated reason for not returning to tour another time. Rob sought a different path by partnering with Hurley in what has become a mutually lucrative relationship. Though we would all love to see Rob back where he belongs, in the limelight, kicking ass on the World Tour, the fact is, Rob has taken the lemons of full time competition and turned them into lemonade in a life beyond the tour, a life we can continue to watch in awe, admiration and jealousy.
