Surfing 50 States - A Q&A with the Surfer-Directors

Surfing 50 States is a brand new surfing flick with an original concept - two Aussies fly to California, get sponsored by Hurley, and proceed to travel all 50 states in search of surf. Surf in Arkansas? Yup, in some way, shape or form. The movie rocks - good on Hurley for making it happen. Aside from our movie review of Surfing 50 States, we caught up with Jonno and Stefan to talk about making the film.

DailyStoke.com: You were in the US for six months, didn’t pay for lodging at all, but stayed with locals across the US. How did you find people to stay with? How much advance prep did it take to find Aussies in Tennessee or surfers in North Dakota?

Jonno/Surfing 50 States: We knew a few people before we came over, than asked them who they knew, then asked the people who they knew, if they knew other people we could stay with, or Aussies they knew, and so on it snowballed! We didn’t prepare too much - but the generosity of Americans meant we only had to sleep in the [Hurley] Ice Cream Truck for 14 nights of the six months, and didn’t pay for accommodation the entire trip!

DailyStoke.com: In Surfing 50 States, other than Cali and Hawaii or other traditional spots, the best waves you got were in Alabama. How is that possible?

Jonno/Surfing 50 States: The best waves were in Alaska where we scored solid six foot cold water waves, then Hawaii where is was mediocre by their standards, then Alabama was the third best waves of the trip! We scored one of the best days of surf for the year in Alabama, but we also got skunked through most of the east and west coasts! Just like all surf trips - you never know what you are going to get!

DailyStoke.com: How does a pair of Aussies just show up in Costa Mesa and convince Hurley to lend you the Hurleymobile?

Jonno/Surfing 50 States: AMAZING! They lent us the Ice Cream Truck, made us t-shirts to get donations to continue our trip, and hooked us up with stacks of free gear. It was awesome they got behind two guys who aren’t professional surfers who had a crazy idea. It took a fair bit of convincing though!

DailyStoke.com: 50 states to surf. What were your top three states?

Jonno/Surfing 50 States: Kansas (Great people, a six legged cow and surfing a Wizard Of Oz stage play) Idaho (Accommodating farmers, surfing on potatoes (!), and Minnesota (Halloween, Homecoming and four free hours on the flowrider at the Water Park Of America!)

DailyStoke.com: Seems like Arkansas treated you pretty well, too.

Jonno/Surfing 50 States: Yeah, we were bummed when the Ice Cream Truck blew the motor for the second time and we were going to be stuck in Arkansas for two weeks as everyone told us it would be boring and nothing to do - but we had a blast with amazing Southern Hospitality, Gator wrestling and surfing a rice/fish farm!

Surfing 50 States is a must see surfing flick. Wait for its arrival in Seppoland.
