2009 ASP Women’s World Tour top 17

The Billabong Pro Maui is a wrap, bringing an end to the ASP Women’s World Tour’s 2008 season.  Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) came out on top, winning the last event of the year and the Triple Crown title, after having already won her second consecutive World Title.  Though Steph continued to stomp her authority on the World Tour, the bigger news was the near completion of the 2009 World Tour lineup.

Returning to the tour for 2009 via their performance on the 2008 World Tour are our World Champ, Steph Gilmore; Brazilian surfer, Silvana Lima, who put in a strong campaign, taking 2nd overall without a single event win; our favorite Peruvian, former World Champ, Sofia Mulanovich; Aussies, Amee Donohoe, Samantha Cornish, Rebecca Woods and Jessi Miley-Dyer; Melanie Bartels (HAW) and Jacqueline Silva (BRA). Saffa, Rosanne Hodge finished 12th in the rankings on the World Tour, but requalified by coming in 3rd in the rankings on the World Qualifying Series.

Double qualifiers were Jessi Miley-Dyer, Rebecca Woods and Silvana Lima, who requalified for 2009 by placing in the top 10 on the World Tour and top 6 on the WQS.  This freed up three more spots on the 2009 tour for WQS surfers beyond the top 6, giving seeds to Paige Hareb (NZL), Alana Blanchard (HAW) and Coco Ho (HAW).

Directly qualifying for the 2009 tour through the WQS were 2008 WQS leader, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Brazilian bombshell and Jeremy Flores’ better half, Bruna Schmitz.

Though she has requalified by finishing 4th overall in the rankings, seven time World Champ, Layne Beachley (AUS), has already announced her retirement from full time professional surfing, after completing what has been her 19th year on tour.  She retains a seed in any event of 2009 as a requalifier, but I’ll have more details in the coming days on whether or not her seat will be replaced by Hawaiian, Megan Abubo, who came in 11th overall in the rankings, just one spot shy of requalifying.

The 17th seat on tour will go to an ASP wildcard, which should go public shortly.
