Amputee Stoked on Surfing

One young man from Afghanistan, Mohammad Malek, lost both his legs to land mines. But the lack of legs has not stopped him from surfing.

He came to Los Angeles in 2005 to receive treatment for his wounds, and after a trip to the beach in his wheelchair, he expressed an interest in surfing. With a little help from Michael Pless, owner of M & M Surfing School in Seal Beach, Malek caught the stoke.

It didn’t take long for him to start paddling out on his own, catching waves, and punting hand stands. Nor did it take long for the characteristic stoked smile of a newer surfer to wrap across his entire face.

If anything is clear from this story, it is that surfing can make anyone stoked. A pretty unique sport for that mere fact.

Sometimes it takes more than two land mines to take the stoke out of life.
