With the final event of the 2008 Women’s World Tour set to kick off today, the countdown is on for the last chance to qualify for the 2009 tour.
The current rankings on the 2008 Women’s World Tour are:
1 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
2 Sofia Mulanovich (PER)
3 Silvana Lima (BRA)
4 Layne Beachley (AUS)
5 Samantha Cornish (AUS)
6 Amee Donohoe (AUS)
7 Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS)
8 Rebecca Woods (AUS)
9 Jacqueline Silva (BRA)
10 Melanie Bartels (HAW)
11 Julia De La Rosa (PER)
12 Megan Abubo (HAW)
13 Nicola Atherton (AUS)
14 Karina Petroni (USA)
15 Rosanne Hodge (ZAF)
16 Serena Brooke (AUS)
17 Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS)
The top 10 women following the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay will automatically requalify for the 2009 World Tour, while the remaining 7 qualifiers will come from a combination of the top 6 surfers on the World Qualifying Series and 1 Wildcard. What’s important to understand when looking at the current World Tour top 17, is that the point spread between number 17, Melanie Redman-Carr and number 10, Melanie Bartels is less than 900 points, meaning anyone outside of the top 10 can technically still qualify through their performance in the Billabong contest, if the points fall the right way. As such, anyone currently on the World Tour still has the chance to requalify through this contest.
Beyond those who are already locked in for the 2009 World Tour by their current World Tour rankings and those who can still qualify through the final World Tour contest, there are a few who have already requalified through their performance on the World Qualifying Series. This list of WQS qualifiers for 2009 are current World Tour surfers, Rebecca Woods (World Tour number 8/WQS number 2), Silvana Lima (World Tour number 3/WQS number 4), Rosanne Hodge (World Tour number 15/WQS number 3) and Jessi Miley-Dyer (World Tour number 7/WQS number 5); and rookies, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Bruna Schmitz (BRA). As such, for each of the four WQS - World Tour requalifies who is double qualified at the end of the Maui competition, another girl from the top of the WQS rankings will qualify for the tour. This big double qualifier pool means we’re sure to see another few new names on the 2009 tour, however things finish up.
Confused? Me too. Tune in this week for the Billabong Pro Maui so we can see just how things will shake out.
